Nestled in the southern branch of the Caribbean archipelago is Dominica – a diver’s dream. Envision pristine reefs, dramatic walls, underwater hot springs, and spectacular marine life… Envision Champagne Reef – one of Dominica’s “signature” dive sites situated on the Southwest of the Island, in the Soufriere /Scotts Head Marine Reserve.
It is also one of the most popular and exotic dive sites offering a truly unique experience for all dive enthusiasts. The fortunate diver surprisingly finds himself surrounded by gentle gas bubbles – like being in a hot tub in the middle of the ocean! Champagne Reef is shallow enough to be enjoyed by snorkelers and scuba divers alike, and the water temperature over the vents found throughout the reef can reach 90 degrees, making the seafloor warm to the touch.
The dive itself usually consists of a circuit around Champagne reef, followed by a safety stop, exploring the hot springs and bubbles. This is a dive for all levels; calm water and light to no currents. It is not unusual to find seahorses, frogfish, schools of squid, and huge stoplight parrotfish around this area.
